REVIEW: Kitty, Daisy & Lewis – ‘Smoking in Heaven’

In a world of reboots and revivals, many people have become jaded at the sound of someone trying to “recreate” something that’s been done before. Too many times have we seen flopped reboots of movies, and sampling music from decades past has become all too popular in mainstream music. However, once in a while, someone comes along who faithfully reproduces a certain kind of sound while throwing in their own style. In turn, something wonderful is created. Kitty, Daisy & Lewis have done just that.

The trio, who are a brother and two sister trio from London, seem to have major influences from rockabilly, swing, early jazz, and just about every other musical style pre 1970’s. Their sophomore album, Smoking in Heaven, sounds like the type of album that could have been wildly popular in the 50’s. In fact, the band purposely set up analog studio equipment in their garage to get that authentic feel to their sound. This group has nailed the unique sound they are looking for, and for fans of the genre, this album is a must have. Tracks like “Don’t Make a Fool Out of Me” and “You’ll Soon Be Here” were ones I caught myself listening to more than once.

This may not be the same type of music that your grandparents used to listen to, and purists may call it trite, but the band has a good sound and play together very well. Expect to see even better music from them in the future.
